BOSSIER CITY, La. – The Bossier Chamber of Commerce hosted its fourth annual Salute to Community Heroes event on May 15 at Margaritaville Resort Casino, recognizing individuals who go above and beyond to serve others in Bossier Parish and beyond. Presented by Willis Knighton Health, the celebration honored 17 finalists and awarded seven individuals and pairs with the prestigious 2025 Community Hero distinction.
Keynote speaker Justice Jay McCallum of the Louisiana Supreme Court delivered a powerful and engaging message, blending humor, wisdom, and heartfelt appreciation for those who serve their communities in quiet yet impactful ways.
The Community Hero Awards, sponsored by Comcast Business, spanned across sectors—military, law enforcement, education, healthcare, and nonprofit—highlighting the diverse ways individuals improve the lives of others. This year’s honorees included:
Mark Allen – Shreveport Fire Department
A U.S. military veteran and a respected Training Captain, Mark Allen’s career has been marked by bravery and leadership. Even after being diagnosed with cancer, Allen’s unwavering spirit continues to inspire those around him.
John Atkins – Atco Investment Co.
A civic leader and District 9 Caddo Parish Commissioner, Atkins has long supported Barksdale Air Force Base and its airmen through both philanthropy and advocacy. His behind-the-scenes leadership has made a lasting impact on the community.
Dr. Kevin Baxter – Louisiana State University Shreveport
As Chair of LSUS’s only doctoral program, Dr. Baxter draws on decades of experience in the military and law enforcement to mentor the next generation of leaders. His commitment to servant leadership is reflected in both his career and his classroom.
Kenny Gallon & Danny “Bo” Turner – Bossier City Police Department
In a harrowing encounter at a Valero gas station, Officer Gallon was critically injured by gunfire while responding to a shots fired call. Officer Turner rendered lifesaving aid to both Gallon and a wounded civilian. Their valor and quick action exemplify heroism under fire.
