Shreveport, La. — Dr. David Guzick, Chancellor of LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS) and Dean of the School of Medicine, has officially tendered his resignation, according to a statement released Tuesday by LSU President William F. Tate IV.
Dr. Guzick, who assumed the role of Chancellor in January 2023 and Dean in June 2024, is credited with leading LSUHS through a period of substantial research and academic growth.
Under his leadership, extramural research funding at LSUHS grew by an average of 14%, and the institution recruited 14 funded researchers since July 2024. The expansion has spurred the need for more research space—prompting the purchase of the former Sears building at Mall St. Vincent, which will be transformed into a dedicated cardiovascular and cancer research facility. The project will proceed without the use of state funds and is expected to open by mid to late 2027.
As Dean, Dr. Guzick was instrumental in launching a modernized, active learning curriculum and resolving the school’s probationary accreditation status. In March 2025, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) granted full accreditation to LSUHS’s School of Medicine.
He also played a key role in strengthening the partnership between LSU Health Shreveport and the Ochsner LSU Health System, focusing on patient care quality and operational excellence—efforts aimed at building a high-performing, integrated academic health center for the region.
“Dr. Guzick has been an exemplary leader,” said President Tate. “His impact on research, education, and patient care will benefit LSU Health Shreveport for years to come.”
A member of the National Academy of Medicine, Dr. Guzick is the only active member of the prestigious institution currently based in Louisiana. LSU has not yet named an interim replacement but indicated that an announcement will be made in due course.
