Baton Rouge, LA – Louisiana has made history as the first state in the nation to allocate federal Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) funding through its GUMBO 2.0 program. Governor Jeff Landry announced the groundbreaking $1.355 billion initiative, aimed at eliminating the state’s digital divide and bringing high-speed internet access to approximately 140,000 locations statewide.

The ambitious broadband deployment will support 100,000 households, 35,000 small businesses, and 4,000 community anchor institutions such as schools, hospitals, and public safety facilities. This investment is expected to generate significant economic growth, creating between 8,000 to 10,000 new jobs and contributing an estimated $2 to $3 billion in new revenue for Louisiana companies.
Driving National Leadership in Broadband
“Louisiana is driving broadband for the rest of the country and delivering concrete, tangible results,” said Governor Jeff Landry. “This historic investment will transform communities across Louisiana, providing the connectivity our residents need to thrive in the modern economy.”
The funding comes from the federal BEAD program, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which aims to expand broadband access in underserved areas. Louisiana’s swift and efficient implementation of GUMBO 2.0 positions the state as a national leader in broadband deployment.
Support from Federal and State Leaders
“Access to high-speed internet is essential for every small business owner, student, and worker, and Louisiana is taking the lead in addressing this need,” said Senator Bill Cassidy. “I’m proud to have played a key role in securing this funding and grateful for the state’s swift action in putting $1.35 billion to work.”
Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (LA-02) echoed these sentiments, highlighting the transformative potential of broadband. “This is a game-changing moment for Louisiana. By rapidly deploying these funds, we’re creating new economic opportunities, improving educational outcomes, and enhancing healthcare delivery for families statewide.”
Innovative Investments Across Multiple Sectors
In addition to expanding internet access, Louisiana will distribute over $500 million in non-deployment funds to address gaps in education, workforce development, healthcare, and agriculture. These funds will support initiatives such as telehealth expansion and digital K-12 programming, marking some of the most innovative uses of broadband funding in the country.
“This funding will ripple across every corner of our state,” said Veneeth Iyengar, executive director of ConnectLA. “Louisianians will have reliable high-speed internet, transforming how we access healthcare, pursue education, and participate in the economy.”
Public Input and Next Steps
The state’s final proposal is open for public comment from November 18 through December 9, 2024. Residents and stakeholders can submit feedback by visiting connect.la.gov/bead.
