WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) is urging Louisianians affected by Hurricanes Laura, Delta, Ida, and Francine to take advantage of a new federal tax deduction that could put money back in their pockets this tax season.
Speaking on the Senate floor, Kennedy explained that the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act, passed in December 2024, allows individuals with uninsured property damage exceeding $500 from federally declared disasters to deduct those losses dollar for dollar from their taxable income.
“This is really important for my state because many of my people suffered damages for which they did not receive insurance payments,” Kennedy said.
The senator also noted that taxpayers who already filed returns for 2021, 2022, or 2023 can submit amended returns to claim additional deductions under the new law and potentially receive a refund.
