BATON ROUGE, LA – The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has announced the death of the first human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), or H5N1, in Louisiana and the United States. The patient, over the age of 65 and with underlying medical conditions, contracted the virus after exposure to a non-commercial backyard flock and wild birds.
LDH confirmed that the patient was the sole case of H5N1 in Louisiana, with no evidence of person-to-person transmission. Public health investigations have not identified additional cases.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the patient during this difficult time,” said LDH in a statement. Due to patient confidentiality, LDH stated there would be no further updates regarding the individual.
Public Health Risk Remains Low
The current risk of H5N1 to the general public remains low, according to LDH. However, individuals working with birds, poultry, or livestock—or those engaging in recreational exposure—are considered at higher risk. LDH emphasized the importance of taking preventative measures to avoid exposure to the virus.
Steps to Protect Against H5N1
LDH issued the following recommendations to minimize the risk of H5N1 infection:
- Avoid direct contact with sick or dead wild birds, animals, and their droppings.
- Cook poultry and eggs thoroughly to avoid consuming raw or undercooked animal products.
- Prevent cross-contamination between raw and cooked foods.
- Keep pets away from sick or dead animals and their feces.
- Vaccinate against seasonal flu if working on poultry or dairy farms. While it doesn’t prevent H5N1, it reduces the risk of coinfection.
If exposed to sick or dead birds or other animals, individuals are advised to monitor for respiratory symptoms or conjunctivitis. Anyone developing symptoms within 10 days of exposure should consult a healthcare provider and disclose their concerns about avian influenza.
Reporting Sick or Dead Birds
The public is encouraged to report sick or dead birds or animals to:
- USDA: 1-866-536-7593
- Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Diagnostic Lab: 318-927-3441
About H5N1
H5N1 is a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza, primarily affecting birds. While rare, human cases can occur through direct contact with infected birds, animals, or contaminated environments.
