SHREVEPORT, La. — United Way of Northwest Louisiana has launched the United for NWLA Disaster Relief Fund to provide financial assistance to hourly-wage households impacted by recent severe winter weather.
The fund targets ALICE families, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These households often work full-time but lack sufficient savings to absorb unexpected financial disruptions. Ice storms, power outages and related weather events caused some workers to miss part or all of their paychecks, creating immediate financial strain.
“When winter weather disrupts our region, it is our ALICE families—those working hard every day to make ends meet—who often feel the impact first and the longest,” said LaToria W. Thomas, president and CEO of United Way of Northwest Louisiana. “The United for NWLA Disaster Relief Fund reflects what it means to live united—neighbors showing up for neighbors in moments that matter. Together, we can provide immediate relief while helping families regain stability and move forward with confidence.”
Pre-approved ALICE families will receive a stipend to offset lost wages or urgent expenses. The organization will also provide case management services to connect recipients with additional community resources and financial guidance.
To expand the reach of the fund, United Way said it is exploring partnerships with local utility providers, including SWEPCO and Delta Utilities, to identify ways to combine resources and assist families with essential utility costs during recovery.
Applications for assistance are open. The organization said it will assess community need through the application process and distribute funds accordingly.
Community members may contribute to the United for NWLA Disaster Relief Fund or apply for assistance through the organization’s website.
