In 1920, the citizens of Shreveport came together to raise funds to build the Shreve Memorial Library on the corner of Edwards and Travis Streets. On December 6, 1923, the building was first opened to the public at a ceremony attended by 1000 people.
Sixty years later, also at the Chamber’s Annual Banquet, the Chamber kicked off the Capital Campaign that would transform the building at 400 Edwards Street from the Shreve Memorial Library to Chamber Plaza, the home of the Chamber of Commerce.
Now it is our turn to take up the mantle and do what we can to preserve and enhance this important building.
At our Annual Banquet earlier this month we formally launched our Capital Campaign to preserve the building’s historic exterior, replace its aging systems and update it to continue to serve as the home to the Chamber and as a downtown meeting place.
This effort is not just about a building, it is about playing our role in preserving the past so that we can build for the future. This is a legacy we will pass on to our children and our children’s children, and we need your help.
