LSU Health Shreveport Announces New Research Facility at Former Sears Property

by BIZ Magazine

Shreveport, LA – In a bold move to address the growing need for research space and contribute to the revitalization of a local landmark, LSU Health Shreveport has announced plans to transform the former Sears property at Mall St. Vincent into a cutting-edge research facility. This innovative project comes in response to a significant increase in externally funded research and the projected need for additional space to accommodate new grants and research talent.

The LSU Health Sciences Foundation, in partnership with LSUHS leadership, purchased the 160,000-square-foot property to support the institution’s expansion. With the current laboratory and office spaces at the Biomedical Research Institute and medical school nearing capacity, the reimagined Sears building will provide a timely solution to house new research labs, faculty offices, and educational spaces.

“We are excited about the potential this project holds for the future of LSU Health Shreveport and the broader community,” said David Guzick, MD, PhD, Chancellor of LSU Health Shreveport. “This facility will not only enhance our ability to attract world-class researchers but will also boost the local economy and contribute to the revitalization of Mall St. Vincent.”

The new research facility, which is strategically located less than a mile from the main LSU Health Shreveport campus, offers several advantages. These include an expedited construction timeline due to the reuse of existing space, increased visibility for LSU Health Shreveport along the I-49 corridor, and additional safety and activity at the mall. Moreover, this project aligns with LSU’s vision to become a top 50 research university system, supporting the institution’s long-term goals.

The project is expected to elevate the profile of LSU Health Shreveport’s research endeavors, particularly in the fields of cancer and cardiovascular research. The proximity of the new facility to the main campus and Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport also opens the door for future clinical operations expansion.

Notably, the project will be funded through a fundraising campaign led by the LSU Health Sciences Foundation, with no state funding required. This initiative represents a significant investment in the future of LSU Health Shreveport and the economic development of the region.
