LSU Health Shreveport Welcomes 175 New Residents and Fellows, Boosting Local Economy

by BIZ Magazine

Shreveport, LA – LSU Health Shreveport’s Office of Graduate Medical Education has welcomed 175 new residents and fellows to its campus this week. This influx of medical trainees, consisting of newly graduated medical doctors (residents) and doctors who have completed a residency program (fellows), is set to provide significant benefits to both the healthcare sector and the local economy in the Shreveport-Bossier area.

These residents and fellows will undergo specialized training at LSU Health Shreveport’s clinical partner sites under the guidance of supervising attending physicians. This mentorship provides crucial insights and teaching points, enhancing the trainees’ medical knowledge and patient care skills. Residencies typically last between three to seven years, while fellowships span one to three years. Consequently, these new physicians will contribute to the North Louisiana community for a duration ranging from three to nine years.

Dr. James Morris, Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education and VA Affairs, expressed enthusiasm about the new arrivals, stating, “The Office of Graduate Medical Education at LSU Health Shreveport is honored to welcome and lead our newest residents and fellows in this next portion of their journey to become practicing physicians. We are confident these individuals will gain the experience and knowledge required to become competent and compassionate physician leaders.”

The presence of these 175 medical professionals is anticipated to have a substantial economic impact on North Louisiana. As many of these residents and fellows relocate to the area, they will contribute to the local economy through the purchase of homes, cars, groceries, and patronage of local restaurants. Additionally, many of these individuals have spouses who will seek employment in the region, further stimulating economic growth.

The arrival of these medical professionals underscores LSU Health Shreveport’s commitment to enhancing healthcare education and services in North Louisiana. Their training not only ensures the provision of high-quality medical care to patients but also supports the local economy, fostering a vibrant and prosperous community.
