Sen. John Kennedy’s Op-Ed on Women’s Sports Finds New Platform After Censorship

by BIZ Magazine

MADISONVILLE, La. — Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) has found a new platform for his op-ed on the importance of protecting athletic opportunities for women and girls after it was censored by the USA Today Network. The piece, which argues against allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports, has been republished by the National Review.

Kennedy’s op-ed originally appeared in Louisiana’s Gannett-owned USA Today Network papers but was removed shortly after publication. According to Fox News, the removal was due to the “loaded language” of the piece, specifically the use of the term “biological male.”

“Many fair-minded people reject the idea that women and girls who work hard to develop their athletic talents must sacrifice their opportunities, privacy, and safety to promote gender activism. I’m one of them,” Kennedy wrote in his op-ed. He emphasized that separating boys and girls in sports is common sense, a principle reflected in Louisiana’s bipartisan Fairness in Women’s Sports Act.

Kennedy’s office was not notified of the op-ed’s removal, and readers were greeted with a “404” error message instead. It was only after Kennedy’s team contacted the Shreveport Times that they were informed of the decision. In response to the censorship, Kennedy criticized the USA Today Network for acting as “speech police.”

“The USA Today Network apparently does not like the way I express myself. They think they are the speech police. Drunk on certainty and virtue, they think they are our moral teacher. This attitude is why so many Americans have lost confidence in the media,” said Kennedy in a statement to Fox News.

Kennedy’s op-ed advocates for Congress to take action similar to Louisiana’s to protect the integrity of women’s sports. He argues that allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports compromises fairness and safety, a view he believes is shared by many Americans.

For those interested in Kennedy’s full argument, the op-ed can be read in the National Review. Additionally, Kennedy’s speech on protecting women’s sports is available on his Senate website.
