Entergy Louisiana’s Historic Solar Expansion Approved by State Commission

by BIZ Magazine

Baton Rouge, LA – Entergy Louisiana has received approval from the Louisiana Public Service Commission to add up to three gigawatts of solar power to its energy portfolio. This marks the largest renewable power expansion in the state’s history.

Commitment to Sustainability and Economic Development

“This approval underscores our commitment to meeting operational and sustainability needs, driving economic development, and protecting the environment,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana President and CEO. “It’s a significant win for the future of our state. I want to thank everyone who helped see this proposal come to fruition, including our local officials and regulators.”

Streamlined Process for Renewable Energy Projects

The approved proposal includes a streamlined procurement and approval process that will enable the construction of several solar projects across Louisiana. These projects are expected to create jobs and generate additional tax revenues for local communities. The move to clean energy is also anticipated to attract new industries and jobs to the state, particularly those seeking sustainable energy sources.

Aligning with Entergy’s Long-Term Goals

This expansion aligns with Entergy Corporation’s broader plans to increase its renewable energy resources by 2031 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Entergy Louisiana’s strategy involves modernizing its power generation portfolio to provide cleaner, more efficient, and diverse energy solutions.

Benefits of Solar Energy

The adoption of solar power offers several advantages, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and job creation. Entergy Louisiana is committed to further investments in clean energy infrastructure, particularly utility-scale solar, which has become increasingly cost-effective.

Current and Future Renewable Projects

Currently, nearly 25% of Entergy Louisiana’s generation portfolio comes from carbon-free resources, including nuclear and renewable technologies. The company’s long-term vision includes expanding investments in energy efficiency programs and collaborating with local stakeholders to promote sustainability and resilience.

Entergy Louisiana has approximately 230 megawatts of renewable resources, including the Capital Region Solar facility, the first utility-scale solar project approved by the Louisiana Public Service Commission, which began delivering power in October 2020. Earlier this year, the commission approved a solar filing consisting of approximately 225 megawatts of renewable projects. This brings Entergy Louisiana’s total solar portfolio to over 3,800 megawatts in various stages of development and approval.

Looking Ahead

This historic expansion of solar power represents a major milestone for Entergy Louisiana, reinforcing its role as a leader in the transition to renewable energy and setting a strong foundation for future growth and sustainability in the state.
