by BIZ Magazine

Friends of Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) celebrated the 34th Annual Louisiana Legends Awards Gala on April 25 at Louisiana’s Old State Capitol, honoring six individuals who have made significant contributions to the state across various fields. The gala, attended by over 200 guests, recognized distinguished figures in the judiciary, sports, philanthropy, public service, and the performing arts.

The evening commenced with a private reception at the Louisiana Governor’s Mansion, where the Louisiana Legends inductees were honored with a champagne toast. Rannah Gray, Louisiana Legends Chairperson, and Therese Nagem, Chairperson of Friends of LPB, expressed gratitude to the honorees for their remarkable achievements and contributions to Louisiana’s history.

Following the reception, guests gathered at Louisiana’s Old State Capitol for a cocktail reception, dinner, and live auction featuring exclusive items. LPB President and CEO, Clarence “C.C” Copeland, extended gratitude to sponsors and attendees for supporting LPB’s mission to provide educational resources and programs statewide.

The highlight of the gala was the Louisiana Legends Awards Ceremony, broadcast live statewide from the Old State Capitol’s House Chamber. Co-hosted by John Denison and Dr. Robyn Merrick, the ceremony featured video biographies of each honoree, followed by heartfelt remarks from the 2024 inductees. Good Morning America Co-Anchor and 2001 Louisiana Legend, Robin Roberts, provided a recorded welcome message to kick off the ceremony.

The 2024 Louisiana Legends include:

  • Bernette Joshua Johnson: Former Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice
  • John Bel and Donna Edwards: Louisiana Governor and First Lady
  • Dr. Sam Nader: Retired LSU Assistant Athletics Director for Football Operations
  • Wendell Pierce: Award-winning actor
  • Todd Walker: Former LSU baseball player and MLB veteran

These esteemed individuals join a prestigious list of past Louisiana Legends, recognized for their significant contributions to the state’s cultural, social, and professional landscape.

The gala also featured a live auction, offering more than 75 items, including original artworks, unique experiences, and memorabilia donated by the honorees. The auction, open until May 12, aims to raise funds in support of LPB’s educational and cultural programs.

The success of the event was made possible by the generous support of sponsors, including The Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation, Fishman Haygood, Jones Swanson Huddell, and numerous others.

The Louisiana Legends Awards Gala & Auction, initiated in 1990, serves as a fundraising and public awareness project for LPB, drawing support from citizens across the state who value its educational and cultural initiatives. The Louisiana Legends are selected annually by the Friends of LPB Louisiana Legends Board Committee, comprising volunteer representatives from around the state.
