SWEPCO Gears Up for Total Solar Eclipse: Proactive Measures and Safety Tips

by BIZ Magazine

Shreveport-Bossier, LA – As anticipation builds for the upcoming total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024, Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) is actively preparing to ensure a smooth response and to encourage safety among customers and communities.

The total solar eclipse, a rare celestial event, has prompted SWEPCO to enact proactive measures to address potential challenges that may arise during this time. Increased traffic and the influx of visitors to the region are expected, which could impact power restoration efforts in case of any outages. SWEPCO is urging customers to stay informed and take precautions to mitigate any potential risks.

Similar to their storm response protocol, SWEPCO has initiated several measures to manage the eclipse’s impact effectively:

Activation of Incident Command System (ICS): In the Texarkana District, SWEPCO has activated its ICS, facilitating coordinated responses and streamlined communication across the organization and with local government partners.

Staggered Work Shifts & Strategic Crew Placement: To address expected traffic congestion, SWEPCO crews will be strategically stationed in areas most affected by the eclipse’s path. Staggered work shifts will help optimize response times for outage restoration.

Collaboration with Community Partners: SWEPCO remains in close communication with local Emergency Management Agencies (EMAs) and law enforcement to monitor traffic patterns and facilitate access to equipment during outages, if necessary.

In addition to these preparations, SWEPCO is continuously monitoring weather patterns and assessing the need for additional personnel to address any unforeseen challenges.

While Southwest Power Pool (SPP), the grid operator for the region, does not anticipate significant impacts on electric reliability, SWEPCO is committed to ensuring readiness and responsiveness to any situation that may arise.

To ensure the safety of customers and employees during the eclipse, SWEPCO emphasizes the following precautions:

Avoiding Electric Equipment: When choosing viewing locations, steer clear of electric equipment to prevent accidents and ensure personal safety.

Emergency Preparedness: Review and update emergency preparedness plans, including arrangements for family members, neighbors, and pets, especially those with medical needs.

Stay Informed: Stay connected with SWEPCO for the latest updates and alerts through their website, mobile app, and social media channels.

In celebration of the eclipse, SWEPCO will participate in community events like the Sevierly Dark Festival in De Queen, Arkansas, and the Texarkana Solarbration, offering opportunities for engagement and education about this astronomical phenomenon.

As the solar eclipse approaches, SWEPCO remains committed to prioritizing safety and reliability while embracing the excitement of this unique celestial event.
