Entergy Louisiana celebrates solar-powered milestone

by BIZ Magazine

Entergy Louisiana proudly announces a historic achievement in its commitment to sustainable energy solutions, as renewable power production has exceeded coal for the first time in the company’s history.

In a landmark moment, data from Entergy Louisiana’s 2023 power generation report reveals that renewable energy production surpassed 1.1 million megawatt-hours (MWh), surpassing coal’s output of just over 900,000 MWh during the same period. This significant milestone underscores the increasing prominence of renewable energy sources in Louisiana’s energy landscape, driven by favorable economics and a growing emphasis on environmental sustainability.

Entergy Louisiana’s President and CEO, Phillip May, expressed pride in the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship and innovation, stating, “This achievement reflects Entergy Louisiana’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation. We are proud to lead the way in transitioning towards cleaner energy sources while continuing to deliver reliable and affordable power to our customers.”

The transition to renewable energy sources aligns with both economic and environmental imperatives. Solar energy, in particular, offers a myriad of benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, enhanced air quality, and local job creation.

Currently, nearly 25% of Entergy Louisiana’s generation portfolio is derived from carbon-free resources, including nuclear and renewable technologies. Looking ahead, the company plans to further invest in clean energy infrastructure, with a particular focus on utility-scale solar due to its increasing economic viability and reliability.

Entergy Louisiana’s commitment to renewable energy expansion is evident in its recent solar project approvals by the Louisiana Public Service Commission, totaling approximately 225 MW. These projects, in addition to existing solar facilities like the Capital Region Solar facility, signify the company’s dedication to meeting its renewable energy goals.

Furthermore, these renewable energy developments are consistent with Entergy Corporation’s broader plans to achieve as much as 15 to 17 gigawatts of renewable resources by 2031. The company has previously announced its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Phillip May emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainability goals, stating, “We recognize the importance of collaboration and engagement with customers, regulators, and community partners in achieving our sustainability goals. By working together, we can create a brighter, cleaner future for generations to come.”

Entergy Louisiana’s investment in renewable energy not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also enhances the state’s energy infrastructure, ensuring a reliable power supply to support the needs of industries and businesses in Louisiana.
