by BIZ Magazine

BATON ROUGE, La. – With the March 23 Presidential Preference Primary and Municipal Primary Election approaching, Secretary of State Nancy Landry is urging voters to take note of the upcoming registration deadlines.

The deadline to register in person, by mail, or at the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) is Wednesday, Feb. 21. Alternatively, citizens have until Saturday, March 2, to register through the GeauxVote Online Registration System. This deadline applies to individuals registering for the first time as well as those seeking to make changes to their registration details.

The Presidential Preference Primary is categorized as a closed party primary, meaning only registered Democrats and Republicans are eligible to vote in their respective party’s primary. However, in 24 parishes, local elections will be held where all voters, regardless of party affiliation, can cast their ballots if their jurisdiction is included. Voters are encouraged to verify their registration status, including their party affiliation, before the registration deadlines.

To facilitate voter registration and access to election-related information, citizens can utilize the GeauxVote Online platform available at www.GeauxVote.com. Additionally, voters are encouraged to download the GeauxVote Mobile smartphone app, which provides essential registration details, voting districts, sample ballots, polling place information, and election results.

Early voting for the March 23 election is scheduled to take place from Saturday, March 9, through Saturday, March 16, excluding Sunday, March 10. Polling stations will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the early voting period.

For further inquiries or to report potential accessibility issues at polling places, individuals can contact the Elections Hotline at 800-883-2805, with TDD/TTY access available at 711, or email the Elections Division at [email protected].

As the deadlines for voter registration draw near, Secretary Landry emphasizes the importance of active participation in the electoral process and encourages all eligible citizens to register and exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections.
