United Way opens up for tornado relief donations

by BIZ Magazine

United Way of Northwest Louisiana (UWNWLA) is encouraging monetary donations to its Tornado Relief Fund to support families that experienced tornado damage from the December storm. Dollars raised from this fund will provide immediate relief to the families affected and help rebuild the communities in which they live.

On Tuesday, December 13, 21 tornadoes traveled across the state of Louisiana, destroying 12 homes in Keithville and damaging 50 in the area. “Many households affected by the tornado are still assessing their damages,” said Deputy Director of Caddo Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, Robert Jump. “However, we know this community will need long-term support as many do not have insurance. We are thrilled to hear that United Way’s Tornado Relief Fund will provide another support option for those affected.”

For families already struggling to make ends meet, storm damage can push these families deeper into financial insecurity. Moreover, these families will likely have to reroute the funds they had available for holiday festivities to handle this crisis instead.

“We want to ensure that the families affected by tornado damages still have the opportunity to experience the joy this time of year brings,” said UWNWLA President & CEO LaToria Thomas. “We believe that everyone deserves to experience the magic of the holidays, and we hope that with the support of our generous community, those affected by the storm won’t have to go without.”
