SHREVEPORT, LA — Shelter From the Storm: A Providence House Documentary, will premiere Thursday, November 3, 2022 at the Robinson Film Center. The film highlights the vision and commitment of two, tenacious trailblazers, Jean Sayres and Mary Anne Selber who had no fear of failure. These strong women and their generous church family, First Presbyterian Church, set out to change the landscape of homelessness for families with children.
This documentary marks the first of its kind in northwest Louisiana and really brings to life the success that can happen when a community- regardless of race, color, ethnicity, socioeconomic status or zip code, rallies together to change a community. Providence House represents the sum total of individuals, church families of every faith, city and state leaders, the philanthropic community, corporations and youth groups from across Louisiana. This beautiful love story details the genesis of an almost 35-year-old, grass root organization that is now a beacon of hope for the city of Shreveport.
Verni Howard, Executive Director of Providence House shares, “We started the journey of capturing pieces of our oral history two years ago. We quickly realized that the depth, breadth and scope of Providence House encompassed an entire community. The full story is critical to share, and we believe will serve as a great teaching tool for our whole community.”
“There are very few in northwest Louisiana that have not been a part of the Providence House family in way or another. Whether it is donating through our green boxes, hosting a volunteer project, reading with our children, participating in Sleep Out 4 Independence, adopting a family at Christmas time, or generously giving- this community is connected to Providence House,” said Jacob White, Board President.
Although sold out, the encore presentation of the documentary can be viewed on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at 5:30pm (BHP YMCA) and free to the public. Reserve your seats at www.theprovidencehouse.com.
