LA Tech project wins award in AIA LA competition

by BIZ Magazine

Ruston Architects Brad Deal and Robert Brooks, working with the Louisiana Tech University School of Design architecture class, won a Merit Award and the Members Choice Award for their design of the Mosaic Art Cabin in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Louisiana 2022 Design Awards. The awards were given on October 7 during the awards presentation of the AIA Louisiana 2022 Conference on Architecture, which was held in Gulf Shores.

The project transformed an abandoned cabin at a summer camp into an arts and crafts maker space, purposefully reintegrating its presence within existing camp roads and walkways. The custom trusses and playful columns were fabricated from reclaimed steel. Nearly 1,000 square feet of reclaimed lumber create a complimentary mosaic of natural texture and color. At night, the color spectrum radiates into the camp, creating a unique beacon in the wooded landscape.

The judges noted, “The design concept was evident in every detail, from beginning to end,” and the tectonic roof structure is a design highlight.

A total of two Honor Awards, and eight Merit Awards were given in the competition, which included 83 entries. A jury of nationally recognized architects judged the competition.
