After 33 years of dedication and service, Chuck Meehan, president and CEO, announces his retirement from Volunteers of America North Louisiana, effective December 31, 2021.
“I consider finding my way to Volunteers of America as one of my life’s greatest blessings, as it has truly been an honor and privilege to be a part of this special ministry of service,” said Meehan. “I pray that I can remain connected to the organization and support our Cherish the Children of God effort by inviting people to learn more about our important ministry of service and encouraging longtime supporters to invest in our endowment by joining our Evergreen Forever Society.”
Meehan joined Volunteers of America North Louisiana as president and CEO in 1988. During his tenure, he has led the efforts to expand the organization’s mission. Today, Volunteers of America North Louisiana is one of the largest human services organization in our area employing nearly 400 professional staff to operate around 40 programs that touch the lives of over 6,300 individuals each year, including veterans, children and families, senior adults, and people with disabilities.
“First and foremost, we are most grateful for all of the years that we have all enjoyed with Chuck and wish him nothing but the very best as he transitions his role,” said Robert Dean, current board of directors chair. “The founders of Volunteers of America envisioned a movement dedicated to ‘reaching and uplifting’ American people pledging to ‘go wherever we are needed, and do whatever comes to hand’. Chuck aced this challenge by picking up that torch, making our community better, and developing a tremendous team of staff and volunteers ensuring the legacy will continue on in North Louisiana.”
A native of McGregor, Iowa, Meehan studied in France while in college where he met his wife, Shreveport-native Camille Johnson. Meehan earned a master of social work degree from Louisiana State University in 1976 and previously worked for the Louisiana Department of Health.
Meehan has served on the Pastoral Council of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, as president of the Rotary Club of Shreveport, and he was inducted in the Junior Achievement of North Louisiana Business Hall of Fame in 2009. Meehan is a past recipient of the National Conference for Community and Justice Brotherhood/Sisterhood Award, The Times Leadership Award, The Shreveport Bar Association Liberty Bell Award, and the Optimist Club Mr. Shreveport Award.
Following a formal resignation letter to the organization’s board of directors, a special board committee, including a representative from Volunteers of America’s national office, will manage the search for his successor. Meehan plans to work side-by-side with his successor to ensure a smooth transition.
