Red River Revel, Inc. is proud to announce a partnership with Louisiana Healthcare Connections for the Shreveport Farmers’ Market to establish a “SNAP Match” program. Starting June 5th and every Saturday through August 28th (except June 19th), shoppers with a Louisiana Purchase (SNAP) card can receive a dollar-for-dollar match of up to $20 in purchases.
SNAP, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, offers nutrition assistance to eligible, low-income individuals and families. SNAP participants receive benefits on an EBT card which is then used to purchase eligible food items at SNAP-participating retailers.
“The Shreveport Farmers’ Market is the only USDA-Approved farmers’ market in the Shreveport-Bossier community, which allows for acceptance of SNAP benefits. We are excited to be a part of Louisiana Healthcare Connections SNAP Match program,” says Market Manager, Emerie Eck Gentry. “Their support will help us meet increased demand from our SNAP shoppers who want and deserve fresh, healthy, locally grown and produced food.”
The Shreveport Farmers’ Market has accepted SNAP cards since launching an EBT program in 2013, but this is the first dollar-for-dollar match partnership. Through this partnership, area SNAP recipients are able to gain access to fresh, nutritious, local produce at the Shreveport Farmers’ Market in a safe, open-air environment while boosting the local economy by shopping with local farmers, ranchers, and artisans. With 39% of the Caddo Parish population and 29% of the Bossier Parish population considered Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (also known as ALICE), we are providing a service that positively impacts the financial and nutritional needs of these households.
As part of its ongoing commitment to addressing food insecurity and improving the social determinants of health, Louisiana Healthcare Connections is proud to partner with the Shreveport Farmers’ Market to establish the “SNAP Match” program. “Every dollar counts and farmers’ markets traditionally provide more value for less,” says Louisiana Healthcare Connections Vice President of Population Health & Clinical Operations, Dana Lawson, DNP, MHA, MSN, RN, CCM, LSSGB. “Providing SNAP recipients with up to $20 in additional spending means they get a much higher nutritional ROI on their pantry and on their meals.”The Shreveport Farmers’ Market is a community service project of Red River Revel, Inc.
