Nonprofits: St. Jude Classic tournament begins Friday

Special to BIZ. Magazine

The 13th Annual Northwest Louisiana St. Jude Classic will be hosted by  Southern Trace Country Club and Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club on the weekend of  September 18th-20th. With the help of our generous sponsors, last year’s record-setting  fundraising pushed the event’s 12-year total net donations to St. Jude Children’s Research  Hospital to $416,685.00!!!! Last year alone we donated $51,100.00!!!

The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and  means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.  Consistent with the vision of the founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based  on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay. All of our net proceeds benefit the St. Jude  Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. We have around 270 players plus social passes  purchased for the weekend.

We have a HUGE RAFFLE with over 60 items including 4 nights at Marina Del Mar  in Orange Beach, a $500 Visa Gift card, $200 to Lewis Gifts, and lots more for $10 per ticket!  No need to be preset to win. We are looking forward to a fun weekend of tennis, prizes and  honoring our Prince Hayden in support of St. Jude Children’s hospital!

Our 2020 St. Jude Classic Prince is Hayden Heaberlin! After an injury to the head  in March of 2014, four year old Hayden Heaberlin began having symptoms of vomiting and  major headaches. After several days of these symptoms, an MRI detected fluid build-up  and a small tumor in the pineal region of his brain. He underwent surgery to drain the fluid  build-up and remove as much of the tumor as possible for biopsy. It was diagnosed as a  mixed tumor with components of an immature teratoma and non-germinomatous germ cell  tumor (NGGCT). Hayden was immediately flown to St. Jude Research Hospital in Memphis,  TN to receive treatment. Hayden’s tumor was very rare, but because all of the years of  research St. Jude did prior to his diagnosis, they knew exactly what treatment would give  Hayden the best prognosis for cure. Hayden underwent six rounds of chemotherapy and 30  days of proton radiation. After the second round of chemo, Hayden’s tumor was growing so  he had an emergency surgery. The doctors were able to remove the WHOLE tumor! Hayden  is now 10 years old, and almost 6 years cancer free! He is thriving in school, and has a  passion for attending church, golf, solving Rubik’s cubes and art. His family is so thankful for  St. Jude. They will always show their support for this amazing research hospital so there are  more success stories just like Hayden’s in the future.

The Northwest Louisiana St. Jude Classic is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. Donations are tax deductible under our EIN #47-4926892.
