Guthikonda named chairman of neurosurgery at LSU Health Shreveport

Bharat Guthikonda, MD, FAANS, FACS, Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of Skull Base Research, has been named Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at LSU Health Shreveport.

Dr. Guthikonda joined the LSU Health Shreveport faculty in 2007 and has always demonstrated a strong passion for teaching, research and advocating for patient care in our community.

Dr. Guthikonda graduated with distinction from Cornell University with his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from SUNY Syracuse-Upstate Medical University ranking in the top 3% of his class. He completed his Surgery Internship and Neurosurgery Residency at Baylor College of Medicine, where he served as Chief Neurosurgery Resident and received the Kinjiro Iwata Award for excellence and leadership throughout his residency. Dr. Guthikonda furthered his training by completing a Skull Base Fellowship at The Mayfield Clinic at the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Guthikonda is currently the President of the Louisiana Association of Neurosurgeons (LANS), serves on the Executive Committee and is one of two Louisiana state delegates for the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies (CSNS), and is active in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) currently serving on the Joint Washington Committee along with serving on numerous additional state, national and international committees and societies. He conducts extensive research in the use of radioactive substances in research, diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors. He has published more than 200 scientific papers and book chapters, and has presented nationally at nearly 200 conference, educational courses and clinics. His is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons.
