Guice: Barksdale AFB program creates opportunities outside traditional campus

Inside the gates of Barksdale Air Force Base, Tech Barksdale has offered degree attainment and career advancement to both service members and civilians since September 1965.

Part of the Louisiana Tech University legacy is a commitment to providing an unparalleled educational experience to our country’s service members.

In 2018, we were named a Military Friendly School® for the fifth year in a row. This ranking from Victory Media stands as a badge of honor and validation of a job well done when it comes to meeting the needs of service members.

But our commitment to filling the educational needs of our active duty Air Force personnel also extends to their dependents, federal employees of the base, military and federal civil service retirees, and civilians from the local community. By providing flexibility and affordability for residents of northwest Louisiana, Louisiana Tech University continues our tradition of providing unparalleled educational experiences.

Currently, two degree programs are available at Tech Barksdale – the Associate of General Studies and the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies. Students in either of the programs can apply approved prior college coursework, including military training credits, towards degree completion. Students can also use evening and online courses to earn their degrees on their terms and in their own time.

While enrollment priority is given to military members, military retirees, civil service workers, and dependents, community members with no military affiliation are also allowed to attend classes at Tech Barksdale. For those who have military education benefits such as Tuition Assistance or GI Bill benefits, there are faculty and staff onsite who are adept at assisting with the usage of those benefits.

The Tech Barksdale Program reflects our University’s mission to extend educational opportunities beyond its traditional campus, and it further exemplifies Tech’s commitment to serving current and former members of the military. Our Tech Barksdale program is well-positioned to continue offering optimal educational experiences for service members and area civilians alike, and the program will continue providing area residents the opportunity to earn a Louisiana Tech degree right here in Bossier.

In addition to programs offered through Tech Barksdale, plans to offer programs nearby at the Bossier City Academic Success Center (ASC) are being developed. The Tech Shreveport Center also serves as a hub for programs in the Bossier/Shreveport area. Programs currently available or that will soon be available at these locations include a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems, Executive Master of Business Administration (MBA), hybrid MBA, Master of Arts in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, and Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling.

Doctoral students can also pursue classes toward their EdD degrees at the Academic Success Center or the Tech Shreveport Center. Many of these degree programs focus on online course delivery to ensure students can earn degrees on their own time and at their own pace. Plus, each of these programs can advance either a military or civilian career.

We invite Shreveport and Bossier City residents to explore the opportunities available at Tech Barksdale, as well as at the Academic Success Center in Bossier City and the Tech Shreveport Center.
